About the Rancilio Classe 7 & 7E

The Rancilio Classe 7 is a traditional heat-exchanger espresso machine built for café use, sold in one-, two- and three-group versions and in a Tall body that clears takeaway cups. It's a workhorse: a single Classe 7 2GR comfortably handles around 150 drinks a day.

The Classe 7E is the volumetric variant — the same machine as the USB model, where each brew button pours a programmed, measured dose rather than relying on the barista to stop it by hand. It runs from an ordinary Schuko socket with a mains water inlet and a drain. Everything below applies to the whole Classe 7 family; the volumetric models just add the programmable dosing and an automated backflush cycle.

Maintenance

How to maintain a Classe 7 / 7E

A little routine keeps it sweet — the same care any café gives its Rancilio. The use & maintenance manual covers every step.

Every day

  • Backflush the groups with a cleaning powder — Cafiza is the café standard — to clear out the coffee oils.
  • Purge and wipe the steam wands right after each use so milk doesn't bake on.
  • Empty and rinse the drip tray and wipe the bodywork down.

Each week

  • Soak the portafilters, baskets and shower screens in a Cafiza solution so the flow stays even across both groups.
  • Clear the steam-tip holes with a pin and a soak in hot water.
  • Check the drip-tray drain runs away freely.

Now and then

  • Feed it softened or filtered water. Scale is the main enemy of the boilers and valves. With hard water, descale roughly monthly; with soft water, about quarterly, using a descaler labelled for coffee machines.
  • Inspect the gaskets and shower screens and renew them when worn (see below).
  • Book a periodic service to check boiler pressures, the pump and the seals.

Group gaskets are the key wear item. When the portafilter starts to creep past centre or the seal weeps, renew the group head gasket — they are about 5 € each (e.g. kahvilaitehuolto.fi) and a fresh one restores a clean, tight seal and crisp lock-in.

On refitting, a thin smear of food-grade silicone grease (Molykote 111) on the gasket and any steam or valve seal keeps the rubber supple and sealing.

FAQ

Rancilio Classe 7 maintenance FAQ

How do I clean a Rancilio Classe 7?
Daily, backflush the groups with an espresso-machine cleaning powder such as Cafiza, purge and wipe the steam wands, and empty the drip tray. Weekly, soak the portafilters, baskets and shower screens in a Cafiza solution so the flow stays even.
How often should I descale a Classe 7 or 7E?
With hard water, descale roughly once a month; with softened or filtered water, about once a quarter is enough. Use a descaler labelled for coffee machines. The cheapest approach is to prevent scale in the first place with soft, filtered water.
What cleaning detergent should I use?
An espresso-machine cleaning (backflush) powder. Cafiza is the café standard. Never use dish soap, and always rinse with a few water-only backflush cycles afterwards.
How do I replace the group gaskets?
The group head gaskets are a wear item, about 5 € each. Renew them when the seal weakens or the portafilter creeps past centre. A thin smear of food-grade silicone grease (Molykote 111) on refitting keeps the rubber supple and sealing.
Is the Classe 7E the same as the USB model?
The "E" electronics are the volumetric equivalent of the USB model: each brew button pours a programmed, measured dose. These volumetric models also have an automated backflush cleaning cycle, started from the centre button.
Where can I get the Classe 7 / 7E manual and parts list?
The full use & maintenance manual and the Classe 7E parts catalog are free to download below, and Rancilio publishes the official spec sheets and diagrams on its resources page.
